In a publicity campaign reminiscent, in Kate Moennig’s words, of “Who Shot J.R.?” (ref= actor Larry Hagman character in 1978-1991 prime-time TV series Dallas whose “murder” became the topic of pop-culture discussions everywhere TV fans gathered…) the murder of character Jenny Schecter in The L Word, record-breaking ShowTime series about a group of West Hollywood Lesbian friends and lovers, is rapidly approaching the same sort of season-long intrigue and mystery.

With so many other more “heady” matters weighing upon us in the “real world” forgive me for a little indulgence into the “non-reality” TV pop-culture.

Jenny Schecter is one of those characters that people love to hate. Credit the talented actress Mia Kirshner, who has developed the character over the last 5 years of  TLW with many a masterful twist and turn that has given Jenny a facinating edge.  Even though I know there would be alot of people who would disagree with me, I believe that Jenny is one of those modern “tragic heroines” that we used to love to tear apart in English or Theater Literature classes. She could have been one dimensional, but instead she is extremely complex. My compliments to Mia, and the writers who let her run with it.

There’s only 8 episodes in this “final season” – all of which are complete.  So the “mystery” is being well-guarded and craftily revealed to the general public in tiny snatches from the network (and in some cases larger chunks from all those clever You-Tube and TLW related site posters who specialize in “spoilers.”)

Eight weeks from January 18th, The L Word will step into history as a modern day pop-culture icon. Hopefully it will also be the trailblazer for other significant LGBT programs and not just a token “phenomenon.”

  1. agree- jenny is indeed a character. and much as we love to hate her, we have to admit that we’ve probably all done what she did, or we secretly wish to do it.

I’m still sad this is the Lword’s final season. *sigh*

  2. I thought Alice had something to do with it? I mean it would make sense what with her spin-off taking place in a prison right? Maybe its just me, but it seems logical. However with Ilene Chaiken you can never be 100% sure! Good work with your blog!

  3. Yeah, I think most people are leaning towards that conclusion – but like you say, with IC – ANYTHING is possible! On the Our Chart threads I’ve even seen speculation about this all being a “dream sequence” in Jenny’s mind – but I think that person was really trying to avoid thinking that Jenny was really “dead.”

I’m not sure IC will resolve the “who dun it” at the end – I think I’ve seen/heard speculation about the fans resolving the ending on OurChart – which will be a REAL feat, since it’s been pretty dead since the bloggers were shut down about a month ago. In on of the cast commentaries, Kate Moennig makes a reference to that.

Such DRAMA!!!! – on and off the screen. Ya gotta love IC for keeping us on our toes! 🙂 -MsQ

  4. I think Burr Connor had her killed…like he said he would if he read anything about himself that she published…

    • Yeah i speculate it to be him too because he said he will kill jenny if ever jenny outed him. Im looking for a proof that its burr. Though im not sure if in anyway in the last season, jenny had outed anyone. Gotta check that

  5. Burr Connor? Hmmm… interesting!!!
    I like that idea!

  6. I think that they ALL had something to do with it, being the tight knit group that they are.

  7. Alright…I just got around to watching the last episode minutes ago…and…who THE HECK KILLED HER?!

    • My theory is that it was….Angie. Yep. She overheard Mama B telling Jenny that she would not tolerate anyone threatening her family and when everyone else was watching the video, Angie found Jenny in the bedroom, managed to position herself so Jenny would trip over her and fall the two stories into the pool!

Which brings me to….since it seems Alice and everyone were in the room watching the video – who had time to kill Jenny?

Everyone’s assuming it was Alice because of the spin-off being set in a prison. I don’t think even the actors know – maybe Eileen doesn’t. All we know is we, the fans, go screwed! Talk about a season-long tease. It just was a really bad way to treat the fans.

  8. People….she killed herself…am I the only one that thinks this??

    • Yeah, I’m leaning towards that one. Either she took a dive into the pool or fell into it or something. I mean, it would be the ultimate stick-it-to-everyone act that Jenny was capable of. I still love her tortured seld – Mia Kirshner has done a great job creating someone we love to hate!

In the interrogation Alice mentions “murdered” and Lt. Duffy jumps on that one – but I still don’t think Alice actually committed the crime. I think she’ll get blamed for it and that explains why she ends up on “The Farm.” Consider this: “The Farm” doesn’t look like a maximum security set-up (just guessing at this point) and if she was in for pre-meditated 1st-degree murder, she would be in a state prison. Hard to say. The really sad thing here i that IC thinks any of us will care after this 8-episode-long SHAFT!

  9. It does make sense that she killed herself, being the attention seeking girl she was, but I recently read about the spin-off series with Alice in jail for murder…so… Alice did it, I’m sure.

    • But what evidence? Why would Alice kill her?
She went to Shane because she wanted to forgive Jenny and be friends because she was alone without tasha. There isn’t really a reason why she would kill her. Bette has way more evidence. Even Shane has more.

And yeah so she went outside and then says Jenny is dead..and blah blah spin-off series but i think Alice is framed. Or takes on for the team. She’s so good-hearted she prabably plead guilty for Tina and Bette to live happily. Who knows.
So annoying i wish they would just tell us.

  10. Yeah…the end of this series angered me even more than The Sopranos… I thought it would be Bette or Shane at first though. But Alice or Jenny herself makes much more sense.

  11. Doesnt anyone think it was Nicky? I mean everything points to her and while everyone was inside watching the movie she was in the trees…But maybe thats too obvious? Maybe not.

  12. Yeah, but Nicky’s too…meh… I just can’t see her doing it, but then again, I can. I don’t know.

Still sure it’s Alice or Jenny.

  13. Nikki could be the one…but you would think she would have fled the scene once she did her dastardly deed! Who knows?

I think it’s still a good bet that Jenny killed herself, or fell or something. It’s so quirky – if you’ve seen any of the Interrogation Tapes being released each week at ShowTime’s official L Word site, Shane confesses to burning up her hair salon/skateboarding shop. Still, we can all agree that IC is crazy!!!!!
    🙂

  14. okay well where can i actually find out who killed her????!!!!!

    • Seduce Creator Eileen Chaiken?????
I don’t think she knows! She eluded to the fact that he spin-off was going to feature Alice on a prison farm gave the appearance of Alice committing the murder, or at least being blamed for it. I hope if we get a movie it will be about something of more substance than the “murder mystery.”

  15. We don’t know! That’s the point of this!

    …Alice…

    • My vote’s still for Jenny.

  16. It was Bette. Im almost positive. The scene where they repeat Bette’s answer to the officer’s question, and her distance throughout the scene after Jenny’s death; are bloth clues towards her sensible guilt. Also the scene where Tina, Bette and Max are talking and “looking for Jenny”, Bette seemed uncomfortable and looking as if she was pretending to act normal. Tina was looking for Jenny because she was mad…max is innocent. But who was the last one to talk to Jenny? Bette, saying she would do anything to protect her family, as well as criticizing Jenny pretty harshly throughout.

Alice, Tasha, Tina, Max, and Kit just don’t seem to suspicious. And Bette has always acted on her anger, and/or fought for what she wants. She even said part of the reason she was leaving was because of Jenny.

Shane is a reasonable suspect. But i think Ilene creates a picture of victimizing Shane to make Bette look Innocent. Of course Shane would be mad, and she did tell alice that they were over. But the LAST SCENE that jenny is in is WITH BETTE.

Come on people. It seems sorta obvious now. It just makes too much sense.

P.S. I’m sure it wasn’t helena. Who cares about her anyway.

    • All good points. How come noone thinks it was Tina, though? Ok so she’s furiously fuming! She comes in the house looking for Jenny talking about putting her out of her misery. Then she goes upstairs to “get a sweater” and when she comes back down she just as peaceful as ever. Talk about a mood change…

      • Shes one of my highest suspects aswell. Tina.and if heard it right she said before disappearing from the camera “i will put you out of your misery.” I have four though, bette, tina, burr and alice a little. Just cos she thought someome actually killed jenny.
